A full-scale invasion of Russia on February 24, 2022, has brought a lot of grief to Ukraine. Since then, the nation has been struggling and fighting for its existence. And Russia is not only killing people and bombing cities – it is trying to erase the nation to its core by taking away its future – the children.

Russia's unlawful deportation, filtration, and adoption of Ukrainian children

Thousands of Ukrainian children have been forcibly displaced from the occupied regions of southern and eastern Ukraine to Russia. These children are taken from state institutions, orphanages, and even their parents. Orphans are taken away under the guise of "rescuing them from the horrors of war." At the same time, children are separated from their families during so-called "filtration camps," never to be reunited with their parents.

The fate of these abducted children takes various forms. Some are sent for adoption to Russian families, while others are subjected to "re-education" in special camps. Within these camps, Russian language and culture are imposed upon them, and they are even subjected to military training, all in an attempt to reshape their identities.

Russian propaganda insists that Russia is "saving" these Ukrainian children from the war and presents a rosy picture of their new lives outside the reach of the alleged oppressive Kyiv regime. However, this propaganda remains conspicuously silent about the true culprits responsible for the war and the threats posed to the lives and safety of these innocent children.

In some instances, a fortunate few have managed to be returned from the camps within the occupied territories and Russia. These children often have relatives and guardians in Ukraine who tirelessly work to secure their return. After getting home, these children tell harrowing stories of indoctrination attempts, coercion to embrace Russian culture, and suppression of their Ukrainian heritage, making it clear that propaganda conceals these dark realities.

Yet, due to the scarcity of reliable data and the uncooperative stance of the Russian side, Ukraine and international organizations face an uphill battle in establishing the precise locations of the deported children. Nonetheless, their efforts continue, driven by the urgent need to reunite the children with their families.

The actions of the Kremlin reflect a determined effort to obliterate Ukraine as a sovereign state, systematically erasing its identity, history, and culture. However, the global community has not ignored this dire situation. As Ukraine stands on the precipice of determining its future and very existence, the International Criminal Court has taken action by issuing an arrest warrant for those responsible for the abduction of Ukrainian children, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Commissioner for Children's Rights Maria Lvova-Belova. This signifies a collective determination to seek justice and hold those accountable for these heinous actions.
