Recently, new footage of bombings with white phosphorus in Ukrainian cities has been spreading online. White phosphorus is a prohibited incendiary substance that causes massive fires and chemical pollution of the soil and is also deadly to humans. Currently, there is information about the use of phosphorus bombs by the occupiers in Donetsk, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, and Kyiv regions, although, in reality, the area may be much more significant.

What is the danger of white phosphorus?

Phosphorus bombs are aviation munitions that contain fuel in the form of white phosphorus, along with a unique mechanism for its ignition. This substance is also used in rockets, mines, artillery shells, and even hand grenades.

The main feature of white phosphorus is that it self-ignites when in contact with oxygen. Its consistency is wax-like, so washing it off will be tough if even a drop lands on human skin. In seconds, the substance can burn through soft tissue and reach the bones, causing enormous wounds in the victim's body. Painful shock can lead to death.

During the explosion of a phosphorus bomb, bright sparks and white smoke can be observed. While the sight may appear striking, it is important not to dwell on watching it because, within a few minutes, the substance will ignite a fire that is extremely difficult to extinguish. The temperature of the combustion of white phosphorus reaches 1300 degrees Celsius. The reaction ceases only in two cases: when there is no access to oxygen or when the object to which the phosphorus has been exposed is completely burned out.

Moreover, due to the very high temperature of the combustion of the substance, after the explosion of such a bomb, the skin of people within a radius of 150 meters can be charred, even if they have clothing on.

How to act during a phosphorus bombing?

Immediately after receiving the news of a phosphorus bomb explosion near your settlement, urgently seek shelter. It is essential to take care of the health of the respiratory system:

1. Wear a gas mask or, if unavailable, a respirator.
2. For pets, wet cloth and fix it in a way that does not obstruct their breathing.
3. Take a bottle of drinking water with you.
4. Do not leave the shelter for at least an hour after the last explosion you heard.

If there are people near you affected by white phosphorus, immediately call an ambulance. Under no circumstances should you touch the skin or clothing that has been splashed with white phosphorus. The affected place should be immersed in water - then the substance will stop burning. Other liquids are not suitable for this purpose!

Do not apply any ointments or powders to the wounds. Hydrogen peroxide and cotton are also strictly prohibited, and it is best to cover the affected area with a moist cloth.

If your pet is affected, carefully neutralize the phosphorus particles from its fur/skin with a damp cloth. Afterward, the animal must be shown to a veterinarian.

If a person has inhaled a dangerous substance, all you need to do is stay with them and wait for the arrival of medical professionals. Under no circumstances should you induce vomiting, as white phosphorus particles will burn the mucous membrane.

If phosphorus gets into the eyes, immediately flush them with cold running water. The procedure should last at least 15 minutes. After that, place a wet, cold cloth on the eyes to prevent the substance from reigniting.
