How to cope with the fear of air alarms?
20.12.2022
Missile attacks are the reason why Ukrainians feel fear and panic for their lives. Just a sound of the air-raid warning signal causes dizziness and tremors. A constant feeling of tension strongly affects a person's psychological state, but is it possible to cope with it? Psychologists assure that it is worth trying. How - we will tell further.
It is natural to be afraid
Experts assure that the fear of air alarms is quite understandable, because this sound gives us information that the danger of missile attack is extremely high. But destructive feelings must be fought, because in the future they can lead to serious diseases.
In order to get rid of anxious thoughts, psychologists advise creating a plan for responding to emergency situations:
- find out location of the nearest shelter;
- At the first air raid signal, immediately descend to the shelter. In this way, you will get the maximum possible protection;
- If it is impossible to get to the shelter for some reason - think rationally. Do not stay on the street, it is better to go to the nearest room and use the rule of "two walls";
- If you start to panic, use grounding techniques (think of a food for each letter of the alphabet, clench and unclench your fists, plan something pleasant, etc. - you can learn about them on the Internet).
How to improve your physical condition?
When the body feels anxious, it starts to produce certain hormones: adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine. It’s not able to bring them out on its own, so it needs to be helped with a glass of water.
In addition, if you know that you will have a busy schedule, you should take care of healthy sleep and nutrition. Try to spend as little time as possible with a smartphone in your hands, because excessive consumption of screen light increases blood pressure and activates the nervous system. A sudden air alarm signal can be the "last straw" for the body and exhaust it to the point of emotional burnout.
After hard days filled with events and missile hazards, it is worth allowing yourself to get back into a routine. Take care of the basics: a delicious breakfast, yoga, cleaning, doing homework with the kids or watching your favorite series.
If you feel that you need professional help, do not hesitate to ask for it! It is worth taking care of your mental health today, otherwise the consequences can be catastrophic!
