How to help in case of carbon monoxide poisoning

Preparing for winter in the conditions of war, Ukrainians equip their homes with various heating appliances: stoves, gas boilers, fan heaters, electricity generators, etc. But when installing such equipment, you should not forget how dangerous it can be if the rules of operation are neglected. In this article, we will talk about carbon monoxide and first aid for symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Why is carbon monoxide so dangerous?
CO, or carbon monoxide, is a toxic gas. It does not have a special smell, taste or characteristic color, so it is very difficult to recognize this substance. Even in a small amount, it can cause sufficient damage to the human body, and in a large amount, it can cause death.
CO, as a rule, is released during the burning of carbon compounds. It accumulates in rooms that are not sufficiently ventilated during the operation of such devices:
- washing machines;
- charcoal grills;
- ovens (any other than electric);
- gasoline generators;
- kerosene heaters;
- automobile engines;
- fireplaces, etc.
Getting into the human circulatory system, carbon monoxide combines with hemoglobin. From this moment, the blood no longer delivers oxygen to the tissues, causing dizziness, nausea, weakness, and problems with the heart and brain.
If you realize that you have all the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, turn off gas appliances and open windows. It is also worth calling the emergency gas service (short number 104).
How to help a person poisoned by CO?
In a situation where someone near you could be poisoned by carbon monoxide, you should immediately call an ambulance (short number 103). The victim should be transported to fresh air, placed comfortably on his back and the belt/buttons undone.
In order to protect yourself from the occurrence of dire consequences, in no case do not leave the turned on gas equipment unattended. In addition, it should be regularly checked for serviceability and ventilation should be used. Be sure to ventilate the premises in which such equipment is installed and, if possible, use a device to determine the concentration of carbon monoxide. Remember, safety comes first!
