Ukrainians now have the option to propose and get married through the "Diia" app. The Charity Fund "Direct Inclusion" explains how you can get married online.

Engagement

  • In "Diia," go to "Services" and select "Marriage Online."
  • Then, click "Make a Proposal."
  • You can send the proposal link to your partner via any messaging app.

While anyone can make a digital proposal, all applications are screened at the next step. You can't register a marriage if the person is already married or the proposal is between two men or two women.

Marriage Application

  • After your partner says "Yes," one must submit a marriage application through "Diia." In the "Marriage Online" section, choose "Marriage Application."
  • Select your partner in the document.
  • Your partner will need to confirm the application through the platform.
  • Next, set the date and time for your ceremony.
  • The application requires an electronic signature and payment of the administrative fee.

Ceremony

You can also have the wedding ceremony online. On your selected date, you'll receive a notification and a link to a video conference. A civil registry officer will conduct the online ceremony, which can last up to 30 minutes.

Your electronic marriage certificate will appear in the app within 24 hours, and the physical certificate can be delivered via Ukrposhta.

Previously, military personnel could remotely update their marital status by submitting an application with their and their partner's details to their commander, who would send the documents to the civil registry office. If the couple couldn't attend the ceremony in person, they could join via video call.This option is still available, but the new "Diia" service simplifies the process.

Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov mentioned that military personnel participated in beta testing "Marriage Online," the service quickly became popular. In the first three days, users made 400,000 proposals, 1,247 couples submitted marriage applications, and 197 beta testers married. According to the Ministry, no other country has such a highly digitized marriage process.

As for divorce, it's not yet available in the app, but the Ministry is looking into it. If Ukrainians support the idea, the function may be added.
