Many Ukrainian women go to the front lines and defend their homeland. According to statistics from the Ministry of Defense (as of January 2024), at least 45,000 women serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Despite performing the same tasks as men on the front lines, female soldiers may encounter biased attitudes and even societal pressure.

The Charity Fund "Direct Inclusion" lists phrases to avoid when communicating with female soldiers.

List of inappropriate phrases and questions:

  • "You have nothing to do on the front lines."
  • "Why do you go to this war? You'd better stay at home with your children."
  • "War is not a woman's business."
  • "You're not useful there."
  • "Have you thought about your children?"

Using such words not only shows disrespect for women but also devalues their work.

After completing their service, some women may have problems with reintegration, as society may treat them differently than male veterans.
