Fluffy Heroes: In Ukraine appears an animal blood donor platform
11.08.2023
Blood transfusions can be vital for people and their pets, especially during the war, when the risk of getting injured increases a hundred times. The charitable organization "Direct Inclusion" explains what owners of animals in urgent need of a blood transfusion should do and how to involve their pets in blood donation.
More about the new initiative
Animal rights activists from the UAnimals organization recently reported about creating a site for finding animal donors. Activists say it should connect those who need a blood donor for their pet and those who are ready to help. They also emphasize that blood donation may not be necessary only due to injury but also poisoning or infection in an animal. Every second can be decisive in such moments, so it is imperative to act quickly.
Who can become a furry donor?
Not all four-legged friends can take part in the project. There are specific criteria for cats and dogs; so far, only these animals can participate in the initiative. The pet should have full vaccination and no chronic diseases.
Each donor undergoes an examination before the blood collection, and if any problems are detected, an animal cannot participate in donation.
For dogs, requirements are the following: age 2-7 years, weight from 25 kilograms; for cats, age 2-6 years, weight from 4.5 kilograms.
These are the main selection criteria, but the veterinarian will also consider other specific characteristics when creating the donor card for an animal.
Owners who want to include their pets in the program must fill out a questionnaire at the link and confirm their intention to "lend a helping hand." After that, you can choose a time to visit the hospital where the blood donation will occur. Such assistance is free of charge.
How to apply for assistance?
The charity fund "Direct Inclusion" notes that this platform is new, so only owners of prospective donors can leave applications on it for now. After September 1, UAnimals will start accepting applications from anyone who needs a transfusion.
