The enemy does not stop nuclear blackmail, deliberately creating dangerous conditions at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine's temporarily occupied territory. For now, the explosive devices have been placed on 4 out of 6 reactors, and a significant number of Russian military personnel are at the plant. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian authorities say the situation is under control, but the possibility of a terrorist attack at the nuclear plant cannot be ruled out.

TV news, social media, and print media have repeatedly explained how to act during an explosion. However, there is almost no information on what to do with pets. How to protect them from radiation? Today, the charity foundation “Direct Inclusion” will address this issue.

What to prepare?

Just in case, hermetically pack and put in the cupboard or storage room the following things:

  • food and snacks for your pet;
  • toys;
  • medicines (if a veterinarian prescribes them and have to be given regularly);
  • bottled water;
  • plastic bowls;
  • pads, wet wipes, pet shampoo, a spare toilet, and filler.

The first steps after the accident

If you are in the room during the explosion, you should stay with the pets, close all windows and doors, and cover the ventilation openings. If you are outside, take off your clothes and put them in a bag before you go home. Thoroughly wash your body with soap, not forgetting about the hair, and wash your pet too. If this is not possible, use wet wipes.

All contaminated hygiene products and clothes should be kept in a sealed bag as far away as possible from you and your animals.

Feed your pets only with food that you have stocked in advance. If you haven’t done it, you can use packaged products only after cleaning their surface with a damp cloth.

Change the toilet immediately. Use a pad if your four-legged friend is used to going to the toilet outside. Remember that following the safety rules for the first two days is essential when you can’t leave the shelter under any circumstances.

Potassium iodide: should pets be given it?

There’s a lot of buzz about whether pets should or shouldn’t be given potassium iodide in the event of an explosion at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Anyway, you should follow the instructions of the local authorities and act strictly according to them. If they say that it is necessary to take the drug, you can give it not only to people but also to animals. In this case, first, consult with the veterinarian about the dosage.
